Message from UAW President Rory L. Gamble on Democratic National Convention
Aug. 16, 2020
Sisters and Brothers:
For UAW members this year's election is about how we rise to the challenges of tremendous changes we can expect over the next four years. The notion of living through a pandemic was something that I doubt any of us ever thought we would experience. We took our national health and many of our freedoms for granted.
Tomorrow is the first day of the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Over the next four days, we will hear about the issues that are so important to our union and to working men and women across this country. We are facing unprecedented health challenges and economic hardships, making this presidential election one of the most important in our history. But we are also facing an evolving economy, changing trade policies, and transformations in our workplaces as never before. We all look for leadership that will unite our nation and address the monumental challenges ahead.
As UAW members, I know we can stand strong and united through these times. We know that when we come together, when we stand as one, we can overcome anything. So, why Joe Biden? Because in Joe Biden we see a steady hand that will guide us through the changes and the hard work ahead. The obstacles he has overcome in his public and private life demonstrate tenacity and compassion and his long career in public service make him uniquely qualified to lead.
The former vice president has been a friend of labor from the very beginning. In fact, he received his first-ever union endorsement from a UAW local in his home state of Delaware. Ever since, Joe Biden has never wavered in his support for policies that help working people. It is his understanding of the needs of UAW members that led him to work so hard to successfully save General Motors and Chrysler during the auto crisis when others said, “let them die.” He is and always has been a phone call away for UAW members.
I invite you to see what Joe Biden is all about during the Democratic National Convention. And I look forward to all of us, together, leading this nation through the challenges and changes ahead.
