On Friday, November 21, our Civil Rights Committee joined our Education Committee for a productive and inspirational field trip to the Walter Reuther Library of Labor History on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit. Our two committees joined forces in solidarity to research the UAW Labor archives, uncovering historical facts and events that help tell the story of our proud UAW’s commitment to civil rights. Civil Rights Committee chair, Sonya Bennett along with Nicole Bell-Blair, used this opportunity to prepare for and support the upcoming Black History Month Program sponsored in partnership with other UAW locals.

Our Local 2256 delegation was welcomed by the UAW Archivist, Gavin Strassel and his staff. Gavin provided titles of important labor history books that have already been added to our growing Labor History Library here at the Local. One of the many highlights of the field trip was when Gavin Strassel acted as tour guide, sharing with our group the highly valued behind-the-scenes artifacts housed at the facility.

In addition to supporting Sonya and Nicole, the Education Committee members in attendance (Chavae Tower, Jenna Catallo, Sarah Higgins and Alan Harris) searched the archives of the Lansing Labor News and any references to Local 2256. The Education Committee’s goal to use original UAW archival historical material will enhance the Mural Project slated for 2026.

Both committees thoroughly enjoyed the great opportunity to work together. Thanks to their dedication, our Local was recognized by the UAW International in both their Facebook and LinkedIn pages, supporting our initiative to learn the storied history of the UAW.
