Local 2256 Community Services Committee Kicks Off First "Adopt-A-Highway" Cleanup on M-43
Local 2256’s Community Services Committee proudly rolled up its sleeves this past weekend for their very first “Adopt-a-Highway” cleanup, taking responsibility for a stretch of M-43 as part of a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and community service.
On July 13th volunteers from the local gathered at their designated section of the highway—gloves on, safety vests zipped, and trash bags in hand. Spirits were high as committee members and family volunteers worked side-by-side, clearing litter, debris, and other unsightly waste along the roadside.

The cleanup, which covered a stretch of M-43, is the first of several scheduled throughout the year. As part of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) Adopt-a-Highway program, Local 2256 has pledged to maintain this segment of road with cleanups scheduled each spring, summer, and fall.
After the event concluded, Chairperson Bree Whalen said "I want to give a huge shout out to all of our committee members and their family members who volunteered their time this past Sunday morning to help clean our stretch of M-43 for our Adopt-A-Highway summer clean up! Our members are the glue that hold this committee together! You all make it such a pleasure to be your sibling, no matter the event or opportunity we participate in! Thank you for all you do! I cannot tell you how proud I am of all of you and how proud I am to be a part of UAW Local 2256 in solidarity!"
The Community Services Committee hopes to see more siblings at the next clean up in the fall!
